Wow! I had a blast this weekend! I was at the Cabin Branch and Stone House Quilt Show in the Virginia Longarm Booth!!! They had AMAZING quilts on display; AWESOME vendors (which I was on of them); the volunteers were WONDERFUL and they FED us breakfast and lunch!!
There were tons of people who went through there and I got to demo all weekend! I LOVE to demo the Innova Quilting Systems! I met so many nice people and want to shout out to a new personal friend Julie - she is now the proud owner of a new machine too!!! Yay Julie!!!!!!!!!!!!! She contacted me through my website too, so that we can stay in touch throughout her longarm experience!
Here I am in front of the booth! We quilted charity quilts for the Cabin Branch Quilt Guild all weekend too. It is so nice to quilt philanthropy quilts to help out the less fortunate - I am so happy to do it!
We were right by the demonstration booth where they showed all kinds of tips and tricks from everything from cutting to binding : D.
It was just a GREAT experience and I am so glad that I got to go! See you there next year!

Tidy Studio - Paralyzed Quilter, but Happy Customers
Recent events have energized me to maximize the space I have in my current studio (I am looking at commercial space for the near future)...love it when the studio is nice & tidy!!! However, it makes it hard for me to work, because I am NOT a tidy person and I don't want to mess it up - ugh! So, I am usually paralyzed for a while until I just dive in and get busy.
I realized during the last few days that I have quite a bit of space and I need to utilize it better...so I took my weekend and de-cluttered/cleaned/organized my studio...LOVE the results. However, I had a customer come over today and it was still a little awkward my sitting arrangement...gotta work on that, but I think she enjoyed seeing my studio and I am SUPER excited to work on her quilt for her : D.
Hopefully this will also encourage others to come and try out the machines. I have opened up a big space to "hang out", some places to sit and have a door that they come in (so they don't have to walk through the house).

If You Are So Lead...
Recently I was approached by someone who saw my website to look into finding a home for her 20 antique quilt tops. These tops are not commercially viable...but to a collector or a dealer they would be quite a find (I think). This is not usually what I do, but...I am so lead to find out about this for her : D.
I met a wonderful lady named Mary Kerr a few years ago who has been doing appraisals, lectures and repairs for many years. I have been very interested in learning about this stuff. I haven't really had an opportunity or reason to look into it until now : D...
I have found out that there are opportunities to donate them to a textile school, museums and/or sell them to a dealer. However, now is not a good time to be selling these types of things as the recession has everyone hanging on to their money and they are not bringing the money they once did or probably will again someday.
Here are some pictures:

End of a Wonderful Year & New Stuff for the New Year!
I have to say I have had a WONDERFUL year! I want to thank everyone who let me quilt for them, who encouraged me on my FB business page, here on my blog and on my website. I have learned soooo much this year and cannot wait until next year!
There are endless possibilities next year! I am looking into new ways to reach new customers, ways to keep in touch with my current customers and ways to help/encourage anyone who is interested in quilting and/or longarm quilting etc.
I plan on having a beginning quilt class the middle of January...if you are interested you can contact me on my FB Business page, my e-mail: lizbquilting@hotmail.com, website - Contact Us form, or leave a comment below on this blog.
I am thinking that we will make a super cute modern style 9 patch...something like the below...
(I got these from Pinterest, so go check them out!)

A Quilting Process...
As a longarmer there are several different processes that you can follow in order to longarm quilt. I wanted to share one with you all as I go through the process of quilting a wonderful quilt from one of my customers, who allows me to do whatever I want to do for her. Here is a pic of her wonderful quilt!
This quilt is very special in that each block contains pieces of fabric from many people in her family. So, what I do is put it on the frame (or sometimes up on the design wall) until it "speaks to me". I know that sounds kinda crazy, but it will speak if I let it. Sometimes, if I don't have time to wait around and wait for the conversation...I have to just go with something that "works". Just looking at this quilt it is fairly traditional in the blocks in that these patterns pieced in the blocks are blocks that have been pieced by quilters for generations. The usual suspects in a traditional quilt are Baptist Fan, Feathers, Clamshells and/or Meander. When I spoke to her we talked about "swoopy swirly patterns" there are many swoopy swirly type patterns of feathers, but not so much of the Baptist Fan or Meander.
Then, I go to the patterns in my computer and online to see what other type pattterns might work or even better be optimum. For many people, I would go with a flower pattern "swoopy, swirly" of course, but my customer is more geometric type I think. (When I say geometric - I mean shapes that aren't recognizable as anything...like swirls, squares, circles etc...not flowers, leaves etc.) A shape that I think would be good for this quilt is a heart...I have found two patterns with swirls and heart shapes...here they are:
Normally at this point, I would send these to the customer to see what they wanted to do...but since I get to do whatever I want to do on this one..I get to pick.
Another thing that I have to consider when I am picking the pattern is what thread am I going to use. On this quilt I think the colors to consider are a patriotic selection...red, white and blue.
You also have to take into account the color of the backing...the backing on this one is solid white muslin...so if you use a dark red or blue then it will be a big contrast and might put off the customer. The contrast is a matter of personality of the customer. Mary and I discussed red thread, for another quilt of hers, so I think she would like the red thread. However, the backing of that quilt is a very busy patterned fabric that is red, white and blue and the backing of this quilt is pure white. White is always a good idea for a traditional quilt and most people are used to white (and neutrals - tan, beige, black etc.) and it makes them happy with the end product.
Due to the heart patterns, the blue is out! So, it is between the white and red. I really love the first pattern with the red thread. So, I am going to take a break and let it settle... I sit in front of the quilt and look at the patterns and try to visualize. Then, I go on the computer and look at the patterns online and see if there are any hearts that I like better. There are some hearts that look like feathers instead of hearts with swirls...since she and I talked about swoopy swirly, I am going with the hearts and swirls. I have decided on the first pattern with the red thread. I will post a picture when I get it done and you can tell me what you think. Then, when I give it back to the customer - I will let you know what the customer thought.
Woke up this morning and turned it all on its head...decided on another pattern feather hearts called Holly's Hearts and decided to go with White thread. Here's a pic...stitching it now.
Lovin' it! Will post more pics when I get it done : D.

Lull in Business - Heightened Activity Anyway!
So, I am experiencing a lull in business...but my activity level is through the roof!
I am pretty sure that the lull has more to do with the fact that it is the end of summer and everyone is on vacation or focused on school starting. Either way...it is giving me a moment to focus on some much needed admin stuff...
I sent out a survey to my customers to find out how they think I am doing for them. I used SurveyMonkey - it is super easy and I got some good feedback. You have to know how to write the questions, but they have help if you are not sure what kind of questions to ask. I highly recommend staying in touch with your customers to close the feedback loop. People don't like confrontation and will usually say something nice to your face no matter how they really feel. SurveyMonkey is anonymous, so you don't have to worry about confrontation. Here is the link if you want to check it out... http://www.surveymonkey.com/
Next, I have to learn how to do my accounting software...I just ordered QuickBooks and it looks really hard!! I am looking for someone to help me set it up, so can populate it with my business stuff. You can try it for free first and they have lots of resources for you to check out...here is the link: http://quickbooks.intuit.com/
After that, I am going to finish the cook book that I am writing for my Quilt Guild and the Show that is coming up in Oct, which I am in charge of running, which includes, managing entries, planning the layout of the quilts, set up and take down as well as managing volunteers for the whole thing and advertising. The quilt show is for the local quilt guild the Stafford Piecemakers Quilt Guild - here is that link: http://www.staffordpiecemakers.com/ (oh yeah did I tell ya I do the website too?)
The website for my guild is http://www.webs.com/ it is really user friendly and intuitive - I use Go Daddy (which is expensive, but I already have a contract)
Then, I am going to send out my reminder e-mail that we are only 30 days out from the Christmas deadline that quilters must meet to get their Christmas presents quilted and bound before sending them as Christmas presents. I usually give them until October 31 - but have to see how many quilts I get. Sorry no link for that : D.
All the while, I do have some quilts to work on...I have the Swirls on Batiks that I put on the FB this morning and two customs to do in the meantime.
It is all so exciting...even when I am not actually quilting it is 100miles an hour - Yay!!!! However, right now...I am going to finish my glass of wine and Scooby Doo with my son/husband : D.

Influx is Uncomfortable...
I LOVE change, however whenever you begin something new it is both exciting and terrifying at the same time (especially when it requies copious amounts of time and/or money : D)
In expanding my business, I am going to be doing some teaching, rental of time on the machine...all NEW. I am not good at freehanding and my new machine will NOT have the safety net of a computer driven system on it - it will be just me. It can be overwhelming, all the changes in the pricing, all the changes in the record keeping, all the changes in the way I spend my time, plus the money investment can just make you want to hide under the covers!
Absolutely unthinkable! I am sooooo excited! I LOVE my life and I want to share it with EVERYONE who is interested! I want to learn to freehand and perfect my skill, I want to teach, (I don't think anyone likes the accounting and record keeping, but whatever), I want to keep in touch with my customers over the net...I want to build something fulfilling and awesome! The money investment is what it is and I hope to make it back in short order...
There is guilt about my son and he is little and obviously you want to spend as much time with him as possible, but I found it is better to spend "quality" time with him as a fulfilled person that unfulfilled quantity of time...we are just happier and nicer to eachother when we get to do our own things for a while and THEN hang out...
I will keep ya'll posted on how it goes, but as of now the excitement is TOTALLY outweighing the terror : D...

The Creative Process...
I am learning more my and more about my creative process. I loaded this quilt this morning...
I began by loading my standard leaf patterns onto the computer and began fitting them on the quilt and adjusting the size to fit the quilt...and my belly just kept telling me "NO"... Obviously it doesn't speak English, so I have had to learn to speak "belly or gut" you might say. I just felt - kinda sick. This is my que to either eat a snack or keep trying new patterns until I don't feel sick anymore. CRAZY huh?
I was consistently putting on swirly leaves and none of them were making me happy, the thread wasn't working either...
when you have a quilt with this many colors you have to use a thread that will either blend to the back or pop out and make a statement (at least that is how I see it). If I was going to do leaves I would want to do some greens and browns, which would pop, but the leaf patterns I was using weren't "cool" enough to "pop" them. So, I had to rethink it...I was beginning to think that I was going to have to sleep on it - which I really can't afford to do right now, I have lots of quilts in que right now...then I decided to try a very neutral thread in a geometric pattern
and I believe I found the plan that made my "belly/gut" calm down and be happy...
I'll post the completed quilt tomorrow - so you can tell me what you think : D.
As promised, here is the finished product...

98 Percent
I have now done 100 quilts (for money) since I got my longarm machine. I actually have done more, but I haven't counted the ones I have done for charity. Whooo hooo!
Unfortunately, into every career a little rain must fall right? Right! So, out of that 100 quilts I have had to give a discount on two quilts...so that is 98% right? And that is good right?? I keep telling myself this because I stew over these quilts... The first on was the gigantic quilt that I did that was hand pieced and was VERY hard to quilt and my longarm got caught in one of the open seams and ripped the back in two places and now the whimsy buggie one I had to do this weekend. Ugh! My teacher told me, when I went to quilt school, not to use different threads on the bottom and top of the quilt. I however have had VERY good luck doing just that for over a year. However, my luck just ran out.
If you are not a quilter you may not know that "pokies" are not good (yeah that is the technical term : D). This is what pokies look like...
However, while the bottom looked like this...the top looked great! I really enjoyed making the designs for this custom quilt. Since there were buggies on the quilt I made the quilt patterns buggies too...
I did an echo quilting around the applique beetles...
Some Swirlies for good measure...
And Voila a cutie quilt with pokies on the back...UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Luckily I do learn from my mistakes...so no more different color thread on the top than bottom anymore!!!!!!!!!!!11

Recent Road to Oklahoma Quilt
I recently did a quilt for a customer/friend of mine from my quilt guild, Stafford Piecemakers Quilt Guild. I absolutely loved this quilt although scrappy isn't really my style. Barb is really quite amazing she is almost an octagenarian and knows how to do Facebook! She comes to my studio and climbs the stairs better than me and she makes wonderful quilts!!
Here is her Bonnie Hunter Road to Oklahoma pattern quilt in all its glory : D...

Lots of Work Lately!!!
Yay, I have had several quilts to work on lately. One of my favorite is my friend Ruth's quilts...
This one was for my quilt guild...we are doing a challenge where we have to use a certain pattern and a certain fabric, it has to be 18" x 18", but those were the only rules. Hers is amazing!!! Mine, not so much - which is the key to the challenge...to see how different each interpretation can be of the same challenge.
Then, another one of my girl Ruth's quilts. I LOVE this one. I quilted and I still can't figure out how she did it...she doesn't use patterns, she just sees patterns and makes them - yep she ROCKS!
Here is the second one I did of hers (today : D)...I haven't taken it off the machine yet, because I still have to do her initials before I can take it down...so the back pic will be posted later. The above one - I didn't take a pic of the back, because the color of the backing was the exact same color as the thread...so it would have been pointless. Had a GREAT last several quilting days - can ya tell?
