I am usually a very positive person and don't like to mention negative experiences, but I had an interesting (and upsetting) encounter yesterday. I went to post some letters and a local shipping shop and the man behind the counter was friendly enough. Then, he said..."I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but do you really think that you can make money at your business." WHAT?
I explained to him that Quilting is a 3.9 Billion dollar a year business and that I was pretty sure that I would be fine... However, I wish I had said..."Nope, I'm planning to go bankrupt; lose my house; my marriage and in general ruin my life"..."here's your sign".
As if that was bad enough when it was happening...I ended up having a crazy dream this morning where I lost my credibility and therefore was rendered incapacitated personally... It was in the morning so it was a sub-conscious thought coming to the surface.
So, I find myself asking "Why did he say that crazy stuff to me?" I already had my space rented (lease signed), banners up and steadily moving toward my Grand Opening - not the time to say something like this to me...
I a realistic optimist and believe that I needed to hear that to think the thoughts that will allow me to avoid a pitfall in the future (because I am very secure in my business plan and ability to make a go of my business). However, what about the person who is following their dream and has doubts already - words have power! If you are not empowering, helping, providing wisdom etc. perhaps you should keep you comments to yourself!

You will succeed!
Liz, as someone who is conscious of the power of words and who is positive by nature, you know that the inconsiderate comment was more of a reflection of him than it was of you. Take it for the lesson you did -- to be better prepared for any future nasties! -- and take the greatest revenge: succeed like crazy! ;-)
You are going to do awesome!!! You are a great quilter and people just don't know this industry.... but it's growing so fast and you are on the right road! :)
